Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
Started reading Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell today. Only had time to read 50 pages or so, but I'm delighted so far. Great atmosphere. It is rather slow of pace, and I do understand that this might discourage some people, but I enjoy it. | | Wednesday, August 10th, 2005 | | 1:00 am |
Worldcon
Back from my first Worldcon ever. Was great. Met a lot of great people, talked to some authors and had loads of fun. Very pleased that Charles Stross won a Hugo for Concrete Jungle. Need to read Susanna Clarke very soon. | | Thursday, May 19th, 2005 | | 10:50 am |
Revenge of the Sith
The third one definitely had what the previous two were lacking. Very beautiful, but at times too many things were happening at the same time to get it all in. I suppose it needs more than one watching to do it justice. Yoda, as always, rocked. Only problem was trying to get home after the movie. Missed the buss and didn't get home until half past four. Oh well, who needs sleep anyway. | | Friday, March 11th, 2005 | | 7:25 pm |

Fantasy and sf quiz
Last summer I decided to write a short sf and fantasy quiz in order to liven up an otherwise dead message board. The quiz consists of 20 quotes from various works of fantasy and sf. Most of the names have been replaced with *, where each * represents a letter. Some of the titles might be a bit obscure since I mainly tried to pick things that have been translated to Swedish at some point of time. Unfortunately this narrows it down quite a bit, so the same author may appear more than once.

Magus
I finished John Fowle's the Magus the other day, and I'll have to admit that's it's one of the best books I've ever read. The journey however was much more enjoying than the end. That is often the case with good books. But all good books requires an end, or they wouldn't be great. Or? I've begun reading Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, and it'looks mightily promising. He's up there with Janny Wurts, if not way beyond, when it comes to using seldom encountered words. I wonder if he speaks like that too? | | Wednesday, September 15th, 2004 | | 9:12 pm |
Translations
I've always been interested in translations, and I enjoy translating shorter pieces when I have the time. Both these were done this summer. Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson The stains of rust seemed to map blood seas on the black, pocked surface of Mock's Vane. A century old, it squatted on the point of an old pike that had been bolted to the outer top of the Hold's wall. Monstrous and misshapen, it had been cold-hammered into the form of a winged demon, teeth bared in a leering grin, and was tugged and buffeted in squealing protest with every gust of wind. Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts The Wars of Light and Shadow were fought during the Third Age of Athera, the most troubled and strife-filled era recorded in all of history. At that time Arithon, called the Master of Shadows, battled the Lord of Light through five centuries of bloody and bitter conflict. If the canons of the religion founded during that period are reliable, the Lord of Light was divinity incarnate, and the Master of Shadow a servant of evil, spinner of dark powers. Temple archives attest with grandiloquent force to be the sole arbiters of truth. Yet contrary evidence supports a claim that the Master was unjustly aligned with evil. Fragments of manuscript survive which expose the entire religion of Light as fraud and award Arithon the attributes of saint and mystic instead. Because the factual account lay hopelessly entangled between legend and theology, sages in the Seventh Age meditated upon the ancient past, and recalled through visions the events as they happened. Contrary to all expectation, the conflict did not begin on the council stair of Etarra, or even on the soil of Athera itself; instead the visions started upon the wide oceans of the splinter world, Dascen Elur. This is the chronicle the sages recovered. Let each who reads determine the good and evil for himself. Birthday and a slight cold
Another birthday has passed, almost unnoticed. I almost forgot it myself. =) I suppose I'll have to throw a party later this month. It was too long a time since I had the chance to sit down and have dinner with a bunch of friends. Came down with a bit of a cold yesterday, but I feel much better today. I had my first lesson in German today, which was far more fun than I had expected. | | Thursday, September 2nd, 2004 | | 12:04 am |
Lack of sleep and accidents
I really ought to sleep more... I haven't managed more than 5 hours of sleep three nights in a row now. Apparently a drain pipe from a the restaurant above us burst sometime during the night, creating quite a mess, to say nothing of the stench, that still lingered when I stopped by this afternoon. A cup of tea, and then off to bed. Gotta go up in less than 6 hours. Current Mood: tiredCurrent Music: Freedom Call - Pharaoh | | Wednesday, September 1st, 2004 | | 12:40 am |
Autumn Sale
Tomorrow our large Autumn Book Sale starts. Looks like it's going to be a great one. Too bad school will keep me from it. But I was there this afternoon helping out with the preparations for tomorrows opening. From now on Wednesdays will entail 6 hours of math... not looking forward to that. If only it was something more interesting than Statistics. | | Monday, August 30th, 2004 | | 11:53 pm |
School starting again
Felt surprisingly fresh this morning considering my lack of sleep. First day back in school. I had my first lecture in Data Communications and Computer Networks, which seems very promising. In general I'm quite satisfied with my schedule. I'm even trying to squeeze in an extra course or two. I'm thinking of taking up German again. It was five years since I touched a German book, and my grammar is non existent. I'd also like to pick up my studies in Japanese, which I had to drop last term. I feel pretty good, even though the day ended rather badly. I was stuck in a meeting for almost four hours, and I had to wait for the train for 45 minutes due to malfunctioning shunt. And of course it was raining once I got home. But it's nothing a good cup of tea can't cure. Current Mood: contentCurrent Music: humming of the computer's fan... | | 12:48 am |
Inventory
We did an inventory today at the bookstore, and we had a small party in honour of one of the owners who retired today. The inventory was mindnumbing, but went quicker than usual, happily enough. The food was great, and the conversation excellent. Unfortunately most people left early, but those of us who remained had a great time. I just got home. Have to go up and go to school in a few hours. I feel great, but I guess I'll be worse for wear tomorrow. =) Current Mood: happyCurrent Music: The Silence of the Night | | Saturday, August 28th, 2004 | | 10:05 pm |
Work and exercise
Working 6 days a week was starting to get at me. I've had most of the week off though, which have allowed me to really catch up with all the things I needed to do. Back to work today, which was sort of nice. I like working Saturdays, enables me to finish all the little things that needs to be done, but you never have time to do in the weekdays. Feels nice to be able leave everything in an orderly fashion when I go back to school. When it comes to reading. Still reading The Magus by Fowles. It's absolutely fantastic. So far it's one of the best books I've ever read. Looking forward to finding out how it all ends. I went out jogging for the first time in two weeks when I got home from work. I've been too tired recently, and I felt rather tired today too, but I managed to drag my ass out anyway. It felt great once I was under way, and I finished the usual route in record time.
